I've been wanting to get this particular eyeshadow palette for a while, but I held off because of the mixed reviews. There were some complaints about it not being pigmented enough. When I got this goodie in the August Boxycharm, I was super thrilled!
This palette is the 2nd volume among the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea collection (which consists of 3 palettes). I wanted vol. II because vol. I and vol. III are too pale for my skin tone, and are more suited for those with fair skin. As you can see, vol. II has a deeper shade range fit for my tan skin.
With warm eyeshadows being the hot thing (pun intended, I'm looking at you, Naked heat), it's nice to break things up a bit with something different. This palette has more cool-toned neutrals. I don't tend to wear a lot of cool-toned eyeshadows since my skin leans towards being more warm (the Too Faced Chocolate Bon Bons and the Naked 2 come to mind as far as what I have in my cool-toned eyeshadow collection). But I feel like I can pull this palette off pretty well. For 8 shades at $36, this is not a bad deal (especially from my $21/month Boxycharm subscription).
I love the packaging of this palette. Rather than the typical square or rectangle-shaped palette, this is circular, almost imitating an oyster or a mother of pearl (after all, this is coming from Tarte's aquatic-themed collection). It's small and fits my whole hand, which makes it easy to travel with.
Though Tarte is known for having super buttery and smooth textures in their palette, the eyeshadows in this one have a bit of a rougher texture. It's still soft to the touch though!
pearl (white shimmer)
conch (matte beige)
sunset (shimmer yellow gold)
marina (satin light brown)
seaside (satin medium brown)
siren (matte deep brown)
breezy (shimmer silvery lavendar)
riptide (shimmer blue black)
I would say that most of the shades in this palette are pretty pigmented, except for Marina and Seaside. Which sucks because those were the shades where I wanted and expected the most pigmentation, especially because I would've loved to use them as crease or transition shades. Both shades are a lot lighter than they appear on the pan.
I like using Siren as my outer-V and crease, and marina on my lid (while dabbing a bit of sunset in the middle of my lid). I see this more as a night-out type of palette since the darker shades are easier to work with and make for a more dramatic look. The shade sunset is stunning and can be used for your inner corner, lined under your browbone or as a highlighter for your cheekbones for extra bling. If you are lighter-skinned than me, you'd have no problem with marina or seaside showing up on you.
Other than the 2 disappointing shades, I actually like this palette a lot! I highly recommend this over vol. I or II because there are much deeper shade ranges, and would suite all skin tones.
Do you have any of the palettes from the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea collection?
