New this week: Beyoncé, Alanis Morissette and Emmy noms - ABC News

Posted: 27 Jul 2020 01:44 PM PDT

This week's new entertainment releases includes Beyoncé's "Black Is King," a "visual album" that arrives Friday on Disney+ and is a companion piece to last year's Beyoncé-curated album "The Lion King: The Gift."

Here's a collection curated by The Associated Press' entertainment journalists of what's arriving on TV, streaming services and music platforms this week.

MOVIES

— "Black Is King": Written, directed and executive produced by Beyoncé, the pop star's "visual album" arrives Friday on Disney+. Given that the last time Beyoncé made something similar she crafted the dazzling film "Lemonade," "Black Is King" — like most things involving Beyoncé — is a major event. This one, a fantasia celebrating black identity, comes as a companion piece to last year's Beyoncé-curated album "The Lion King: The Gift." She has described it as "a story of how the people left most broken have an extraordinary gift and a purposeful future."

— "Stockton on My Mind": Mark Levin's documentary, debuting Tuesday on HBO, charts the journey of Michael Tubbs, who became the youngest mayor of a major American city by the age of 26 and the first African-American mayor of his hometown, Stockton, California. Tubbs has helped make the low-income working-class community in Central California an incubator for new ideas in combating institutionalized racism, gun violence and economic hardship.

— "The Fight": Elyse Steinberg, Josh Kriegman and Eli Despres' documentary, honored for social impact filmmaking at this year's Sundance Film Festival, follows the work of the American Civil Liberties Union during the presidency of Donald Trump. It's multi-front battle that, in this riveting account, encompasses conflicts over immigration, abortion and voting rights. As the directors showed in the excruciatingly entertaining 2016 Anthony Weiner documentary "Weiner," they have talent for colorful fly-on-the-wall filmmaking of politics in action. Here, they focus on four tireless ACLU attorneys. Magnolia Pictures releases "The Fight" on-demand Friday.

MUSIC

—That's what new friends are for: Musical icon Burt Bacharach and Kacey Musgraves producer Daniel Tashian have teamed up to release a new five-song EP. "Blue Umbrella," out Friday, was recorded in Nashville and features Bacharach on piano and Tashian on vocals. Tashian has worked with a handful of country music acts, but he's best known for his magic on Musgraves' epic 2018 album "Golden Hour," which earned him his first pair of Grammys. Bacharach, a six-time Grammy winner and three-time Oscar winner, is one of music's most revered composers, known for tracks like "That's What Friends Are For," "(They Long to Be) Close to You" and "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)," among others. "Blue Umbrella" is Bacharach's first album in 15 years.

—R&B powerhouse Brandy is releasing her first independent album. "B7," her seventh studio release, will be out Friday and is the Grammy winner's first album in eight years. It features collaborations with Chance the Rapper, Daniel Caesar and her daughter Sy'rai, who sings on "High Heels" and performs background vocals on the single "Baby Mama." Sy'rai also co-wrote both tracks. Brandy had a hand in writing all 15 songs on "B7" with helpers including Darhyl Camper Jr. (H.E.R.), Kim "Kaydence" Krysiuk (Ariana Grande), Akil "Fresh" King (Beyoncé) and others.

—It's been a busy year for Grammy-winning rocker Alanis Morissette: She celebrated the 25th anniversary of her groundbreaking "Jagged Little Pill" album, and a musical version of the record debuted on Broadway in December. She's also been working hard in the studio to make "Such Pretty Forks in the Road," her ninth album to be released Friday. It's her first new album in eight years and was originally supposed to drop in April but was pushed backed because of the coronavirus pandemic. Morissette also had an anniversary tour planned for her 1995 album, but that was also scraped due to COVID-19.

TELEVISION

—The Emmys, the awards that honor TV's best, will be unveiling this year's crop of nominees on Tuesday — but online and not on TV. The usual announcement ceremony at the TV academy in Los Angeles was canceled because of the coronavirus, with Leslie Jones instead hosting a virtual event to be found at Emmys.com. How the Sept. 20 ceremony on ABC will play out is anybody's guess, but we do know that Jimmy Kimmel will host. As for the contenders, with last year's winners "Game of Thrones" and "Fleabag" having hit the road, there's room for fresh faces including the comedies "Ramy" and "Insecure."

Beyoncé's new movie, Black Is King, is coming to Disney Plus this Friday, July 31. If you haven't listened to her album, The Lion King: The Gift (see all options below), you should do so before watching Black Is King because it picks up where The Gift left off. The film -- which is being called a visual album -- is said to celebrate Black culture. Beyoncé wrote, directed and served as executive producer.

Black Is King follows the voyages of Black families throughout time and tells "a tale about a young king's transcendent journey through betrayal, love and self-identity," Disney said in a press release. The young king's loved ones help guide him to reclaim his home and throne.

"With this visual album, I wanted to present elements of Black history and African tradition, with a modern twist and a universal message, and what it truly means to find your self-identity and build a legacy," Beyoncé wrote in an Instagram post.

The film has sparked controversy among members of the African community over its portrayal of African cultures. In the trailer below, the characters in Black Is King are seen wearing animal skins and face paint.

Watch the Full New Trailer for Beyoncé's Visual Album 'Black Is King' - ELLE.com

Posted: 19 Jul 2020 12:00 AM PDT

Last month, Beyoncé did what she does best and surprise-dropped the first trailer for her visual album, Black Is King. This morning, a new trailer for the July 31st Disney+ film also dropped and serves as a reminder that the wait is almost over. Here it is:

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

The new project was all Bey: She wrote, directed, and executive-produced it. If you watch the trailer closely, too, you'll see members of her family, including her mother, Tina Lawson, and her husband, Jay-Z. You'll also see Naomi Campbell, Lupita Nyong'o, and Kelly Rowland.

The film is a reimagining of the story of Disney's The Lion King, in which Beyoncé starred as Nala last year. The album will feature songs from The Lion King: The Gift; Bey's album that was released alongside the film last year.

She narrates the trailer and begins:

"You were formed by the heat of the galaxy. What a thing to be both unique and familiar. To be one in the same and, still, unlike any other. 'Life is a set of choices. Lead or be led astray. Follow your light or lose it."

Disney and Parkwood Entertainment released a statement about the project, via Variety, last month: "The film is a story for the ages that informs and rebuilds the present. A reunion of cultures and shared generational beliefs. A story of how the people left most broken have an extraordinary gift and a purposeful future."

In a post on June 28, Bey shared her own thoughts about the album: "Black Is King is a labor of love. It is my passion project that I have been filming, researching and editing day and night for the past year. I've given it my all and now it's yours."

Is Beyoncé's Disney+ Release, 'Black Is King,' Rated PG? - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Posted: 26 Jul 2020 03:25 PM PDT

Hot off the heels of the "Black Parade" premiere, Beyoncé has a visual album set to premiere on Disney's streaming platform, Disney+. Is Black is King appropriate for children? Why is it premiering on Disney's streaming platform? Here's what we know about the latest visual album from this award-winning artist

Beyoncé is releasing her second visual album

Queen Bey is about to be the queen of Disney's streaming platform. Recently, Beyoncé appeared in the photo-real adaptation of The Lion King, creating an album inspired by the film. This album, The Lion King: The Gift, then inspired a visual album, which is titled Black is King.

Because of its ties to The Lion King, it will premiere on Disney+. This visual album will be available exclusively with a subscription to Disney+, a service that houses content created by Marvel, Pixar, and National Geographic.

There's also music-related movies, like Taylor Swift's live concert, titled City of Lover. This is the first of Beyoncé's visual albums to be added to the library, though, joining Disney+ on July 31.

Will 'Black is King' be rated PG?

Disney's streaming platform, Disney+, typically holds movies that are appropriate for young children, but it's not without exceptions. There's some shows that are considered to hold "adult content," including The Simpsons, and movies that are rated PG-13, including Avengers: Infinity War.

The music of The Lion King: The Gift does not contain any explicit lyrics or warnings, according to Spotify. In fact, one of the songs was used in Disney's photo real adaptation of The Lion King: The Gift, "Spirit." Unless one of the characters curses in between the songs, there will, presumably, be little to no explicit language in Black is King

Because of the streaming platform it will be housed on, Disney+, and the music featured in the production, it's safe to assume that Black is King will be appropriate to watch with children. Presumably, more information on this visual album will be announced in the coming days, though.

'Lemonade' doesn't have an official rating

Prior to releasing Black is King, though, Beyoncé debuted her groundbreaking visual album, Lemonade, on the premium television network, HBO. This included songs like "Formation," "Sorry," and "Freedom," which, together, told the story of her relationship with Jay-Z. Finding out he cheated on her didn't exactly result in a "clean" body of work.

Common Sense Media gives Lemonade a PG-13 rating. There is some cursing throughout the album, as well as depictions of violence. For some though, the empowering message and representation outweighs the curse words. Presumably, Black is King will feature similar empowering images and even acting from Beyoncé herself.

Black is King debuts on Disney's streaming platform on July 31, just a few weeks following the premiere of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton. Until then, fans can watch the 2019 adaptation of The Lion King on Disney+. To learn more about Disney+ and to subscribe, visit their website.
