Last week we reported that Karlie Kloss dyed her famous long bob blonde. I tracked down Kloss's colorist, Alexis Unno of the Garren New York Salon (Garren is the guy who gave Kloss the cut heard around the fashion world), to get all the details on the model's new look. And no, it wasn't to match her BFF Taylor Swift.
Is this the first time you've colored Karlie's hair? 'Yes! And it's the first time she's colored her hair. She's played around with clear glazes in the past, but other than that, she's never actually dyed her hair. This was a big milestone for her.'
Did she tell you why she wanted to do it? 'It wasn't for a job or anything like that, and it wasn't to look more like Taylor Swift, which is funny because everyone is saying that! It was more of a personal thing-she was just in the mood for a change.'
And did she bring along any inspiration images? 'No, she didn't, but we talked about how she was a towhead as a child and how she didn't want traditional hair color-single process and highlights-that would force her back to the salon every four weeks for a root touch-up. With her schedule, that's impossible. Plus, she wanted something more subtle, like the color her hair would turn after spending time at the beach. She also wanted to keep the cool-girl factor of embracing her natural hair color-it was very important to Karlie that it looked natural.'
So how did you create that subtle, beachy look? 'I started by applying very fine highlights through her entire head. This was so it would grow out really cool. If she didn't want to dye her hair again, it wouldn't be a problem. I wanted to give her very noncommittal hair color. Then, using a very gentle lightener, I hand-painted the ends of her hair and the pieces around her face. I didn't want to make her too light; we wanted the color to be similar to the blonde she had as a kid-that's what we were trying to imitate.'
Did you send her away with any products to help her take care of her new blonde? 'I sent her off with some products from Garren's line, most importantly the R&Co Gemstone Color Shampoo and Conditioner. They're for color-treated hair and leave your hair super, super shiny; I use them every day. I also gave her the R&Co Rockaway Salt Spray. It's different from other salt sprays because it has these luxurious oils in the formula that give you that piecey cool-girl hair without drying it out. It's perfect for when she just wants to wash and go.'
